POSITION SUMMARY
The City of Isleton is seeking a dependable, hardworking, and versatile Public Works Maintenance Worker to assist with the maintenance, repair, and operation of City streets, storm drainage and wastewater infrastructure, parks, grounds, buildings, equipment, and other public facilities.
This is a hands-on position requiring a broad range of maintenance skills and the willingness to perform a variety of assignments based on the needs of the City. The ideal candidate is reliable, mechanically inclined, comfortable working outdoors, able to operate tools and equipment safely, and willing to respond to both routine maintenance needs and emergency situations.
Because Isleton is a small community, the Public Works Maintenance Worker must be flexible and willing to work across multiple areas of City operations rather than within a single specialized division.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Streets, Rights-of-Way & Drainage
- Perform routine maintenance and repair of City streets, alleys, sidewalks, curbs, gutters, and public rights-of-way.
- Assist with pothole repair, asphalt patching, crack sealing, minor concrete work, and other street repairs.
- Install, repair, clean, and maintain traffic signs, posts, pavement markings, barricades, and related traffic-control devices.
- Clear vegetation, debris, and other obstructions from streets, sidewalks, rights-of-way, drainage areas, and City property.
- Inspect, clean, and maintain storm drains, catch basins, drainage ditches, culverts, and other stormwater facilities.
- Assist with flood preparation, storm response, pumping, road closures, and related emergency activities.
Wastewater & Utility Infrastructure
- Assist with the inspection, cleaning, maintenance, and repair of wastewater collection facilities and related City infrastructure.
- Inspect manholes, sewer lines, pumps, and other system components as assigned.
- Assist in identifying and responding to sewer blockages, leaks, overflows, damaged infrastructure, and other operational problems.
- Operate pumps, hoses, cleaning equipment, and other tools used in wastewater and drainage maintenance.
- Assist contractors and specialized service providers performing work on City utility infrastructure.
- Follow all applicable safety procedures when working around wastewater facilities, confined spaces, chemicals, pumps, electrical equipment, or other hazards.
- Perform only those specialized activities for which the employee has received the required training and authorization.
Parks, Grounds & Landscaping
- Mow, edge, trim, weed, prune, and otherwise maintain City parks, landscaping, trees, open spaces, and public grounds.
- Operate mowers, trimmers, blowers, chainsaws, and other landscaping equipment.
- Perform basic irrigation system inspection and repair.
- Remove weeds, brush, trash, and debris from City property and rights-of-way.
- Assist with tree and vegetation maintenance and removal as appropriate.
Buildings & Facilities
- Perform routine maintenance and minor repairs to City buildings and facilities.
- Perform basic painting, cleaning, carpentry, plumbing, fixture replacement, and other general maintenance work within the employee's training and ability.
- Identify facility conditions requiring repair by a licensed contractor or other specialist and report them to a supervisor.
- Assist with setup, cleanup, and maintenance associated with City meetings, community events, and public facilities as needed.
Equipment & Fleet
- Operate City vehicles, trailers, tractors, mowers, loaders, pumps, generators, and other light or heavy equipment for which the employee is properly trained and authorized.
- Safely operate hand tools, power tools, pneumatic tools, landscaping equipment, and other maintenance equipment.
- Perform routine inspections and basic preventive maintenance on vehicles, tools, and equipment.
- Maintain tools and equipment in clean, safe, and serviceable condition.
- Report mechanical problems, damage, and safety concerns promptly.
General Public Works & Emergency Response
- Respond to service requests and reports of damaged or unsafe public infrastructure.
- Place cones, barricades, signs, and other traffic-control devices around work areas.
- Assist with emergency operations involving storms, flooding, sewer problems, fallen trees, roadway hazards, facility failures, and other incidents.
- May be required to respond outside normal working hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
- Assist Police, Fire, emergency management personnel, contractors, and other agencies during emergencies or significant incidents as directed.
- Maintain work areas in a clean and safe condition.
- Purchase, pick up, load, unload, and transport supplies and materials as assigned.
- Assist other City departments with maintenance, setup, transportation, or operational needs when appropriate.
Records & Public Interaction
- Complete basic work orders, inspection records, equipment logs, maintenance records, and other documentation.
- Report infrastructure problems, safety hazards, equipment deficiencies, and maintenance needs to a supervisor.
- Communicate professionally and courteously with residents, businesses, contractors, coworkers, and members of the public.
- Refer complaints, technical questions, and policy matters to the appropriate City employee.
- Follow City policies, safety procedures, and applicable local, state, and federal requirements.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education
High school diploma or GED equivalent.
Experience
Previous experience in public works, construction, utilities, landscaping, facilities maintenance, equipment operation, agriculture, mechanical repair, or a related field is desirable.
The City may consider candidates without previous municipal public works experience who demonstrate strong mechanical ability, reliability, willingness to learn, and experience performing comparable physical or maintenance work.
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS
- Possession of a valid California driver's license and an acceptable driving record is required.
- A California Class A or Class B Commercial Driver's License is desirable.
- The employee may be required to obtain a Class B Commercial Driver's License within a specified period following appointment if required by assigned duties.
- First Aid and CPR certification may be required following appointment.
- Traffic-control or work-zone safety training may be required.
- Additional licenses or certifications related to pesticide application, equipment operation, wastewater, stormwater, traffic control, or public works maintenance are desirable or encouraged based upon assignment.
The City may provide or assist with job-related training and certifications as operational needs and available resources permit.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
The position requires frequent physical activity associated with public works maintenance and construction, including the ability to:
- Stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, climb, reach, push, pull, and perform repetitive physical activity.
- Regularly lift and carry tools, equipment, materials, and other objects.
- Lift and move objects weighing up to approximately 50 pounds independently and heavier objects with assistance or appropriate equipment.
- Work on uneven terrain and around streets, drainage facilities, wastewater infrastructure, construction sites, equipment, and moving vehicles.
- Safely enter and exit trucks, tractors, and other equipment.

WORKING CONDITIONS
Work is performed primarily outdoors and may involve exposure to:

The position may require work outside normal business hours, including early mornings, evenings, weekends, holidays, and emergency call-outs.
